Cancer is very widespread diagnosis, for both people and their pets. Cancer is now the leading cause of death in pets. Over the years, I have heard first hand, literally hundreds of pet owners tell me their pet cancer stories.
When someone calls, to inquire about our puppies, often times they will tell me the story of the loss of their last pet companion. It is rare that I hear of a dog dying from old age. In fact, I was suprised the few times I was told about an old age death. I would estimate, that 90% of the stories I hear, are deaths from cancer.
Today, I am saddened and alarmed. Angry. Cancer is a horrific preventable disease. My google searches tell me that there are environmental causes. Recently, I learned that a disinfection byproduct of the chlorination process in public tap water, is a known bladder cancer contributor. Is it possible that the THM (trihalomethanes) in the tap water contributed to this pup and owner's unfortunate fate? Is it pesticides and toxins in the food? It is so difficult to know? We may never really know the source? My recommendation is to consider everything a pet ingests and is exposed to, and raise the pet in a natural non-chemical environment. This method is way less expensive than treating disease.
The sweet man's 15 month old puppy acquired bladder cancer. She tragically had to be put to sleep. There was a large mass in her bladder. It was surgically removed, and the bladder was reconstructed to be smaller. I am so sad about this, that I either have to educate myself further and help others, or quit the job that I love.
It is more understood if the pet is elderly, and expected that it will die from something soon. However, a one year old puppy? I am grieved. This is the youngest cancer case that I have ever heard. Dogs don't just "get cancer", it is caused from something.
Meanwhile, please, please, please.....educate yourself about canine cancer. Prevention. Spend the extra money up front to feed better quality holistic dog food, pure filtered water, nutritional supplements, and minimize chemicals. Please, please, please raise your pets holistically. This gentleman said that he spent about $9000-$10,000 on his pet, striving to cure her.
That word.....cancer....we hear it so much that we minimize the impact of this tragedy, unless we experience it ourselves.
